“Break Up Every Night” is about a partner in a flawed relationship with the unshared desire for love.
Videographer and director of some music videos for The Chainsmokers, Rory Kramerasked Andrew Taggart to talk about the song at the Samsung 837 NYC Listening Party and he responded:
As you guys can tell the song is about dating someone who breaks your heart all the time, that’s super — loves you one day and not the next and I think we’ve definitely been there and this is a fun way to write about that. We have a lot of deeper cuts on the album, this is a more fun, up-beat record that talks about a moment of tension in the relationship.
The song was previewed on Snapchat, before it was released on the duo’s debut LP Memories…Do Not Open. The duo teased part of the song’s lyrics in a tweet. The song made its live TV debut on SNL on April 8th 2017. The duo also performed hit single “Paris” on the show.
